From Moerwijk to toMorrow

BSc Project: Moerwijk (the Hague) - South Holland

This project focuses on the regional redevelopment of Den Haag Zuidwest, a neighborhood facing social, spatial, and infrastructural challenges. As the Regional Planner, I developed a vision that integrates local redevelopment within broader regional networks—connecting spatial planning, public transport, climate adaptation, and housing policy. The core of the plan is to turn Den Haag Zuidwest into a resilient, accessible, and inclusive part of the growing metropole.

Regional Analysis

The regional analysis examined large-scale patterns in income, mobility, spatial structure, and climate impact across Zuid-Holland. Den Haag Zuidwest emerged as a vulnerable area, with low livability, poor accessibility, and socioeconomic stagnation. Using GIS tools and policy documents from the MRDH, Province of Zuid-Holland, and the Verstedelijkingsalliantie, key development zones were mapped. Special attention was given to heat stress, biodiversity, and opportunities for district heating using residual and geothermal sources.

Vision & Strategy

The regional vision is built on three main pillars: a Sustainable Metropole, a Green-Dense Metropole, and a Connected Metropole. These themes guided the translation of regional trends into local spatial strategies. In Den Haag Zuidwest, this means densification around public transport nodes (like Station Moerwijk), strengthening existing green corridors between major parks, and integrating sustainable energy networks like WarmtelinQ. The strategy balances climate resilience with quality of life, focusing on long-term livability and spatial justice.

Urban Design

The vision was tested in Moerwijk, a subdistrict chosen for its strategic location and urgent need for renewal. Key interventions include a new multimodal station square, a car-free Melis Stokelaan, and a green park route connecting Zuiderpark and Park Overvoorde. Densification is introduced in phases with different typologies—ranging from high-rise near the station to courtyard housing at the park’s edge—while preserving cultural heritage and improving public space quality. Moerwijk becomes a blueprint for transitioning from today’s challenges to tomorrow’s metropole.

My Role as Regional Planner

As Regional Planner in this group project, I focused on translating regional trends and policies into spatial strategies for Den Haag Zuidwest. Working closely with team members from other disciplines, I developed a vision that connects local redevelopment with broader goals around mobility, sustainability, and livability. My role bridged analysis and design, ensuring that our proposals were both regionally grounded and locally meaningful.
